CIVICUS World Assembly, 7th

Type Civil society
Date 05/23/2007 — 05/27/2007
CiutatGlasgow
Description

The 2007 CIVICUS World Assembly, which was the second of the Glasgow series, was held from 23-27 May, 2007. Some 745 delegates attended from over 119 countries around the world. This was a definite increase from the number of countries recorded at the 2006 event, at which only 105 countries were represented.
The Accountability focus theme was one that had emerged from the 2006 World
Assembly as a key concern for civil society and other stakeholders. CIVICUS sees it as likely to become the new ‘guiding principle’ for public actors for this decade. It is seen as underlying the social and political power of public actors as it cuts across sectors, as civil society, government and business are concerned with their own and others’ accountability. The discussions at the 2007 World Assembly were, therefore, centred on how each sector could become more accountable, with the recognition that civil society actors have to practice accountability in order to hold others accountable.

The aims of the CIVICUS World Assembly are broadly as follows:
- To initiate and consolidate networking and collaboration for civil society
globally, including especially north-south and south-south collaboration;
- To provide a space for professional and leadership development;
- To enable and facilitate practitioner experience and skills development;
and,
- To contribute to enhanced visibility for, and understanding of, civil society
and citizen initiatives.
