University for Peace

Never has the peace and security role of the United Nations been so important - or so complex. Recent upheavals in the Balkans, Africa, Timor and elsewhere have made clear the indispensable role of the United Nations in resolving conflicts. They have also demonstrated the importance of preventing them. Conflicts no longer impact only on the military forces involved. Indeed its main victims are largely civilian non-combatants - particularly women, children and the aging.
It is in this context that the mission of the University for Peace is to be pursued so as to strengthen it and extend its programmes and capacities to enable it to fulfil the mission entrusted to it by the United Nations General Assembly.
